Michael Hood
2023- present Ph.D Student 2023 M.S. Nova Southeastern University 2020 B.S. University of Tampa My research focuses on the quantifying phenotypic and genotyping variation of cnidarians. Currently, I’m working on pairing genotype to phenotype of the lab strains of upside-down jellyfish, and measuring spatial and temporal expression of cellular senescence in Pacific Acropora larvae during metamorphsis. I hope to also work on hybridization in Caribbean acroporids. My master thesis focused on how species of algal symbionts effected growth, survival, and symbiont acquisition of a variety of Caribbean coral species during their early life stages. Ultimately, this research gives insight into how corals acclimate and adapt to their changing environments and assist in coral reef health and restoration by maximizing conservation efficiency. When I’m not conducting research or studying, you can find me SCUBA diving, and caring for my many house plants and bonsai, and coral reef tanks! I also have an amazing little cat named Binky. I enjoy traveling for both research (Japan and Australia) and to gain a unique worldly perspective (New Zealand, China, and Europe). |
Demi Carballosa
2023-present M.S. Student 2021 B.S. Florida International University My research explores the hidden biodiversity of coral reef ecosystems, with a focus on the fascinating world of cryptofauna. I delve into how these small but mighty creatures play a crucial role in the health and resilience of our beloved marine environments. My interests extend beyond the lab, touching on topics like marine conservation, restoration ecology, and microbiology. I'm particularly passionate about uncovering the intricate relationships between coral reefs and their microbial communities to better understand and protect these ecosystems. As a Hispanic researcher, I am committed to promoting diversity and inclusion in the scientific community. I strive to create welcoming spaces and engage the public in the wonders of marine biology. Together, we can safeguard the amazing biodiversity of our oceans and inspire the next generation of ocean enthusiasts! When I'm not in the lab or out in the field, you can find me crafting, baking, and making! I love unwinding with fun projects that bring me joy and allow me to express my creativity. |
